DETAILED OVERVIEW

Pensthorpe Nature Reserve & Gardens

Pensthorpe is the ultimate destination for discovery, here you can explore magical gardens, take a trail through the internationally recognised reserve and get up close with feathered friends.

Pensthorpe was home to BBC's spring watch from 2008-2010.

With fivefabulous gardens to explore, Pensthorpe is one of the best places in Norfolk to satisfy green-fingered gurus and horticultural enthusiasts. It’s where you can unwind and admire to your heart’s content.

Millennium Garden - Packed with over 150 species of shrubs, grasses and climbers – not to mention the wildlife that visits throughout the seasons – Piet Oudolf’s ode to natural nuance is where you’ll find the very best perennial planting in the region.

Glade Sculpture Garden - Under a canopy of evergreen lays the glade sculpture garden, previously home to the red squirrel conservation project now home to a captivating fairy, towering dandelions, kaleidoscopic mosaics and array of flora and fauna.

Wildlife Habitat Garden - This wildlife-welcoming spot is buzzing with visitors (and we don’t just mean the humans!). Spot dragonflies, amphibians, reptiles, moths, bats, beetles, birds, butterflies and, of course, bees! And get helpful hints and tips for your garden too.

Corten Infinity Garden - The most recent addition to Pensthorpe’s garden line-up, this attention-grabber is manicured glory that can’t be missed. Designed around a mighty piece of corten steel, it’s where vibrant species like banana and ginger plants put on a spectacle.

Wave Garden - Designed by Chelsea Flower Show gold medallist Julie Toll, this woodland idyll is the perfect place to roam, reflect and see lush foliage all year long. Be sure to make a beeline for the popular sculptures, which you’ll find dotted around the landscape.

The Nature Reserve

Bird Hides - Got twitchy feet? Pick up a pair of binoculars and settle into the seven bird hides across the Nature Reserve. With seasonal migrants and a growing number of resident birds, there are plenty of squawkers to gawk at.

Wader Scrape - Set off for this shingle and sand island paradise – the perfect place to spot breeding waders, wintering waterfowl, and birds of prey from two hides. You’ll be in good company too – it was a popular filming location for BBC Springwatch.

Wader Aviary - Wade right in (figuratively speaking) and soak up the protected microclimate. Designed around the stone walls of a former bullock pen, the mixed aviary is the ideal way to observe waders feeding, resting and nesting as they would in the wild.

Wildflower Meadow - There’s a real buzz in the air at the traditionally managed wildflower meadow. As you wander along the boardwalk, keep your eyes peeled for dragonflies, butterflies and demoiselle damselflies, or idle away the hours surrounded by over 80 grass and flowers species.
